The USA and UK are phasing out 2G and 3G networks, and this might affect Three Ireland customers while you are roaming.

What does this mean?

Some customers using older devices will no longer have service while roaming in the USA and UK. Customers using newer devices will also need to make sure that their 4G and Wi-Fi calling is activated before going abroad.

How will I know if this affects me?

If your settings need to be updated or if your phone is not compatible for use with 4G or 5G, you will receive one of the below texts from Three:

  • 4G voice calling & Wi-Fi calling have been added to your account. With these improvements, you will have improved call quality in the ROI and even keep connected in countries without 3G (such as the UK & USA). Learn more at [3.ie/4Gcalling]

  • From April, UK and US operators are closing their 3G networks and beginning to close their 2G networks. When roaming in these locations, customers are advised to use a 4G/5G handset instead of an older handset that only supports 2G/3G. To find out more please visit {3.ie/4Gcalling}

How do I update my settings?

Thankfully, updating your settings to activate 4G and Wi-Fi calling on your device couldn't be easier! All you need to do is follow the steps outlined in our blog about 4G and Wi-Fi calling, which you can read by clicking here.

What do I do if I'm using an old phone?

To check if your device is compatible with 4G, take a look at our device guides by clicking here. Once here, all you need to do is select your phone from the list or type the make/model of your phone into the search bar.

If your phone is not compatible with 4G/5G, this means it will not work in the USA or the UK once their updates are complete. To avoid having issues while roaming in either the USA or the UK, you will need to upgrade your phone to a newer model. Check out what phones we have on offer by clicking here.
