Performance, Storage, Battery
The all new A19 chip in the iPhone 17 boasts 20% faster performance than the A18 found in the iPhone 16. It comes with 256GB base storage, which is a welcome upgrade over the 128GB on the iPhone 16, putting it above the entry level variants of the Pixel 10 and S25 series. Apple has promised that the A19 will be more power efficient, providing all day battery life and up to 8 hours more video playback time than the iPhone 16. Apple has promised faster charging this year, bringing the iPhone 17 to 50% battery level in just 20 minutes.
Display
The display might be the biggest upgrade for the iPhone 17. It has a 6.3 inch display, up from 6.1 inches last year.
It has a peak brightness of 3000 nits, putting it on par or above the latest from Samsung and Google and providing a fantastic outdoor viewing experience. ProMotion has finally come to the base model iPhone, allowing the 17 to change from 1Hz to 120Hz. This provides a smoother user experience at 120Hz while actually saving battery by dropping as low as 1Hz while idling.
Camera
The iPhone 17 comes with a 48MP Fusion rear main camera, and a 48MP Fusion Ultrawide. Fusion expands the capabilities of each lens, offering up to 2x optical zoom in 12MP. The front camera has received a significant upgrade this year. Apple has brought centre stage to all new iPhone 17 models. This is an 18MP, square shaped lens which can take photos in any orientation. This allows you to take landscape selfies while holding the phone in portrait mode, opening up new creative possibilities. In video calls, it will keep your face in the centre of the frame by dynamically following you. This means customers can focus on their calls without being worried about being out of frame.
The Thinnest iPhone Ever
The iPhone Air is a new addition to the lineup this year, replacing the Plus model. At just 5.6mm thick at its thinnest, this is the thinnest iPhone ever made. Apple promises Pro level performance with the A19 Pro chip, and all day battery life with a custom high density battery. The iPhone Air is also the first iPhone to release as eSIM only globally, meaning customers with a physical SIM card will have to transition to eSIM.
Performance, Battery, Camera
The iPhone Air comes equipped with the A19 Pro chip, the fastest processor in any smartphone. This is also more efficient than the A18 Pro, which was class leading in energy efficiency. The new C1X modem promises 30% less power consumption than the C1 in the iPhone 16e, which already had fantastic energy efficiency. These efficiencies point to a battery life that can compete with regular smartphones despite its incredible thinness. It comes equipped with a 48MP Fusion Main camera, capable of 12MP 2x telephoto shots, similar to the iPhone 17.
Display, Durability, Design
The iPhone Air has a 6.5 inch Super Retina XDR display, with up to 3000 nits of peak brightness, and varying from 1-120Hz with ProMotion. This display is a significant upgrade over the 16 plus from last year, and stands out even among other high end smartphones. It has a Titanium frame, and has a Ceramic Shield 2 front and back, making it 3x more scratch resistant and a whopping 4x more crack resistant than previous iPhones. Weighing in at only 165 grams, it is the lightest iPhone in the new lineup, even with its large display.
iPhone 17 Pro & iPhone 17 Pro Max
The iPhone 17 Pro series promise to be the best iPhones ever, with stunning displays, class leading performance and studio grade cameras. They have been completely redesigned, being made from a single, machine cut piece of space grade aluminium, with Ceramic Shield 2 covering the front and back.
Performance
Both Pro models come with the A19 Pro Processor, the C1X modem, and the N1 connectivity unit. The A19 Pro is touted as the most powerful processor in a smartphone, with upgrades to its GPU and efficiency cores, making it more capable of handling intensive tasks such as gaming or video editing, while also being more power efficient. The C1X modem is the most efficient modem Apple have ever used, which will cause less drain on battery over 5G. The N1 modem brings WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6, the latest connectivity technology available in a smartphone.
Camera
The 17 Pros come equipped with triple 48MP fusion cameras (Main, Ultrawide and Telephoto). Fusion technology allows one lens to cover a variety of different use cases. A 48MP Main camera is now capable of 12MP 2x optical zoom, for example. This has allowed Apple to build 8 pro camera systems into just 3 lenses, making these already studio grade cameras even more capable and versatile. The front facing camera has been upgraded with to 18MP with centre stage, providing a wider field of view, seamless video calling with dynamic reframing, along with a host of other benefits.
Display
The 17 Pro has the same 6.3 inch Super Retina XDR display as the iPhone 17, including ProMotion (1-120Hz), a peak brightness of 3000 nits, and a new anti- glare coating for better visibility in sunlight. The 17 Pro Max has a 6.9 inch display with almost identical spec to the pro. All iPhones in this year’s lineup have a 460 pixels per inch sharpness. To top it off (literally) they are covered with Ceramic Shield 2, the most durable glass on an iPhone ever.
Battery, Durability, Storage
The use of a unibody aluminium frame has allowed Apple to improve durability and fit in a larger battery this year.
With space grade aluminium and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and back, these should be the most durable iPhones ever made. Apple has increased the size of the battery in both Pro models. This, alongside the more efficient processor and modem, give a big boost in battery, giving the iPhone 17 Pro Max the best battery life in an iPhone.
