Troubleshooting

How do I reset my settings?

If you're experiencing any issues connecting to your modem we suggest that you reset it.

To do this and return it to its default settings, turn on the modem, use a pin and press and hold the ‘Reset' button for 5 seconds. The ‘Reset' button can be found on the inside of the modem below the power key.

The modem will automatically switch off and then back on. Once it's rebooted it will have been reset to its default settings.

I’m having problems using my Wi-Fi key.

If your Wi-Fi key wasn’t accepted try the following tips;

  • Remember, when you enter the password (Wi-Fi key) for your MiFi modem, type it without a space between the eight characters - for example 79E49E05, not 79E4 9E05.
  • If you need to check your password – it’s normally on your MiFi modem under the battery. It is printed next to the SIM card slot.

How can I improve the wireless range between my MiFi modem and computer?

The strength of signal will vary depending on where you are, the weather conditions, even the construction of a building! If you need a stronger signal strength and faster download speeds, here are some things you can try:

  • Try not to put the MiFi modem on the floor or behind a sofa, as this can reduce the strength of the wireless signals. Put it on a table or other flat surface instead.
  • Try to locate the MiFi modem in a central position in the house.
  • If your MiFi modem is on the ground floor and you're having a problem picking up the signal upstairs, put the modem on a shelf.
  • Move the MiFi modem away from the computer and any other appliances that can cause electrical interference.
  • Move your wireless devices away from any appliances or objects that can cause interference, such as: microwave ovens, metal sheets, cordless phones, cordless keyboards and computer mice. If you think one of these appliances may causing interference, switch it off or move it to see if it is the cause.
  • If interference seems to happen randomly, check if other appliances – a microwave oven, for example - are being used at the same time that the interference occurs.
Laptops with built-in wireless adapters typically perform poorer than external wireless adapters, so you may want to use an external USB wireless adapter to improve performance.

How can I improve my MiFi internet speed and signal strength?

The strength of signal will vary depending on where you are, weather conditions and the construction of the building.

If you need a stronger signal strength and faster download speeds, here are some things you can try:

  • To make sure you get the best signal, treat your dongle like an aerial. Consider the positioning! (an upstairs room will be better than one in a basement flat).
  •  When indoors try to have the MiFi modem near a window. This can also help to improve the signal strength of your connection.
  • Some rooms get a stronger signal than others, depending on the thickness of walls. The more windows in the room, the better.
  • Use Three’s coverage checker to check out the quality of service you can expect in your area.

I’m having Connection problems

If you're having connection problems or you've forgotten your password or PIN, you should reset your device.

To reset your device:

  1. Turn on your device
  2. Using a pin or paperclip, press and hold the Reset button until the screen switches off
    The device will automatically restart
Your default settings will now be restored. You can find your device name (SSID) and Wi-Fi key printed on the battery cover or on the LCD screen.

I need to check signal strength

If you want to use your device to stream video, use Skype and play games online, you'll need to check that it's possible with your device and signal strength. You may not be able to play games online and use Skype if you don't have a strong signal. You'll get the best performance if you have 3 bars or more on 3G or 4G.

To check your coverage, click here.

You can check your signal strength from these icons on your device's LCD screen:

  • 4G – connected to our 4G network
  • 3G – connected to our 3G network
