Adding iPad cellular to iPhone plan

Hi all

I am in the process of buying a new iPad. I was considering a cellular model as I do travel quite a bit throughout the year. I was wondering if I can join my iPad to my existing iPhone plan or does it need to be a separate plan? I don't really want to manage to two numbers, so hoping that I can just "latch" the iPad on to my existing plan. BillPay customer.
