Data Roaming Charges

Data Roaming Charges

Data roaming is the term we use when you browse the internet on your phone while abroad. You use data every time you use the internet on your phone – whether you’re checking email, browsing Instagram or streaming music.

When you go abroad, you’ll receive a text from Three informing you how much it’ll cost to use data, call or text in that country.

All customers can use the Data Roaming Cap to make sure they aren't charged more than they expect.

Data Roaming in the EU

Most of our plans include an EU data allowance. For example, our €20 prepay deal includes 6GB roaming. If you’re not sure how much your plan includes, you can check your roaming allowance on your My3 account, listed with your other allowances. For more details on EU roaming and a full list of which countries you can use your EU data allowance in, check out three.ie/roaming.

  • When the Data Cap is on your number your usage will appear as EU Data Cap on your bill or call history.
  • When the Data Cap is not on your number your usage will appear as EU Data Roaming on your bill or call history.
  • If you have a data roaming bundle your usage will appear as Data Roaming on your bill or call history.

Data Roaming in non-EU countries for Bill Pay customers

When you use data while roaming in a non-EU country you are charged a daily rate by default. The day runs from 00.00 to 23.59, Irish time.

  • The daily rate costs €10.08 per MB for the first 3MBs. From 3MB to 50MB is then free.
  • Any unused free data cannot be carried forward to the next day.
  • The daily rate for the region you are in is the same no matter what network you use.
  • You can also travel from one country to another and continue to get the same rate, once the countries are in the same region. This means that you could travel from the USA to Canada and pay the same rate in both countries.
  • You are only charged for the days you use data. If you don't use data on a particular day, you won't be charged.

The full charges are below:

Region

Daily charge period

3MBs to 50MBs is then free

50MBs and over will then be charged at €10.08 per MB, in per KB increments.

You don't need to opt in to get these rates. They are available to all our Bill pay customers who have roaming activated.

Please Note:

  • The daily data charge is the default charging mechanism and the daily data charge applies from midnight (00.00) each day until 23.59 and 59 seconds. The 'day' is based on Irish time (GMT) which you will need to take into account when roaming in other time regions.
  • To avoid the possibility of a new daily charge, your last data session should be completed by 23.59 (GMT). If your session continues through midnight, some of the data used after midnight may be included as a new daily charge in the following day. To avoid additional charges, Three recommends you complete your session before midnight (GMT).
  • All usage is charged per KB.
  • Excess usage is charged in per KB increments and is charged the same rate as the daily charge per MB rate, that applicable to the region that is being roamed in.
  • There is no cap on an excess charge (other than the regulatory cap), so the charging will continue with any continuous data used, and the excess charge will appear as a line item for the day on your bill.
  • The daily data rate is only applicable for usage that occurs in one specific region and will accumulate over the day. If, on the same day, roaming usage occurs in another region, then a new daily data charge will commence. The charges in each region will appear on your bill as two daily charges, and where applicable, the free or excess charge line items, with the region name specified against each line item.

Maritime (At Sea) and In-Flight Roaming

When roaming at sea or in flight, you are roaming on a satellite network. While roaming on these networks we will notify you of your rates to make a call, send an SMS or use data. It’s important to know that if you are on a ship/flight within the EU region, this is not part of EU roaming regulation.
