Gamers, young and old, were eagerly anticipating the launch of the latest console in the Xbox family yesterday, the Xbox Series X, the fastest and most powerful Xbox ever. So, let’s take a look at what this new console has to offer!

How does it look?

It is completely different from the previous Xbox One S and Xbox One X. The Xbox Series X is a black tower which can be stood upright or laid down, whichever you prefer. It has a disc drive on the left-hand side, along with a HDMI 2.1 output port, three USB 3.2 ports, a networking port, a power input port, and an expanded storage slot.

The controller has also had a makeover, and gamers are keen to try out the new hybrid D-Pad, as well as with the share button, which will now sit directly on the controller.

What’s on the inside?

Those who get their hands on one of these consoles can look forward to:

  • CPU: Eight-core 3.8GHz (3.6GHz with SMT) custom AMD 7nm
  • GPU: 12 teraflops 1.825GHz
  • RAM: 16GB GDDR6
  • Frame rate: Up to 120 fps
  • Resolution: Up to 8K
  • Optical: HD Blu-Ray disk drive
  • Storage: 1TB SSD

Let’s compare this to Xbox’s predecessor, the Xbox One X:

  • CPU: Eight-core 2.3GHz custom AMD
  • GPU: 6 teraflops 1172 MHz
  • RAM: 12GB GDDR5
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps
  • Resolution: Up to 4K
  • Optical: HD Blu-Ray disk drive
  • Storage: 1TB HDD

It’s clear cut who wins the race here!

Can I play my old Xbox games on it?

You sure can! Apart from games that require the Kinect sensor, all Xbox One games will work on your Xbox Series X. In addition to this, you can also play any Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that are currently supported on the Xbox One. And don’t get rid of your old controllers just yet, as accessories are backwards compatible too!

What about the Xbox Series S?

In a surprise announcement recently, Microsoft let us all in on the Xbox Series S, a sort of little sibling for the Series X. This all-digital console is the smallest Xbox yet, and will also come with the new Xbox Wireless Controlle.

Here’s what’s on the inside of this little beauty:

  • CPU: Eight-core 3.6GHz (3.4GHz with SMT) custom AMD 7nm
  • GPU: 4 teraflops 1.565GHz
  • RAM: 10GB GDDR6
  • Frame rate: Up to 120 fps
  • Resolution: Up to 1440p
  • Optical: Digital Only
  • Storage: 1TB SSD

I know a lot of fingers are crossed in this house that there will be a new Xbox under the tree on Christmas morning 😊
