Issue with open.internet.public APN

Hi all,

I hope you can help me. I have 3Broadband 5G (Huawei CPE Pro 2 router) which works great. A little while ago I was provided with public IP address which also works great: just had to change APN to open.internet.public.

Everything normally works great, with a little caveat: when I tried to download large, single file (we're talking 20+ GB, specifically PS5 games), after about 1.5 -2 GB of downloading at really good speeds (ca. 300 Mbps), the download stops, not just on this particular device, but other devices on the same network (both wired and wireless) are also having problems downloading files (I can browse web, but any file download fill stop after around 10 MB, that includes stuff like streaming video and Speedtest.net). This happens for about 5-10 minutes, after which everything resumes, again for a while, or another ca. 2 GB of large file is being downloaded.

After a lot back-and-forth (rebooting, resetting etc.) I realized, that after switching to default APN (3FWA.ie) the issue doesn't happen: I can download massive files with no issues. The moment I switch APN back (to open.internet.public): the same thing occurs and I can recreate it every time (for this to occur download needs to be really fast, downloading files at 60 - 80 Mbps doesn't seem to cause this issue).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Is there like a limit on the APN of some kind? or maybe issue with public IP address?

Thank you!

Daniel

I do not have this issue currently as I haven't tired downloading heavier files but I was curious if they sorted out your problem? I have NAT 2 through the APN fix and wanted to know if it's going to mess up the speeds.

Sadly, they have not. Three engineers were doing some real-time analysis of my problem but did not find a solution. the last update I got was back in November 2022:

"At the moment, the team don't have any further deep dives they can do in relation to the difficulties. However, as they are aware of this now, they are going to watch out for any other customers who report the same or similar difficulties while connected to the public IP address and this may help with future investigations."

The issue still persists however, and again, only with large downloads, and only at high download speeds.

That's quite a pity. At first I was told the only solution was to change my 5g down to 4g/3g using some router settings by the customer helpline but I was then told this was not the correct advice and an APN change would help. Naturally I thought of the 4g change as "throttling" of my speed, so to hear that even the APN change can lead to a throttling of speeds feels like it goes against the advertised promises of listed speeds plus Gaming. It really shouldn't be one or the other! I wonder is there a way I can stress test this to confirm it perhaps by downloading another game and checking my speeds as it downloads.

Daniel I can confirm that after downloading a meagre 2gb of a 17gb game (which is fairly small considering new games can be 120gb) my download has simply stopped in its tracks. Exactly how you described it. Wow.

Maybe you could reach out to 3 Support and point them out to this thread.

Hey @Daniel_06653 , I'd love to look into this further for you , pop through to us here on PM along with your broadband number, full name, address and date of birth and I can have this investigated here for you.

Thank you Niall, PM sent.
