Roaming charges at sea

I just received a bill from three for €44 roaming data charges. This was when I was travelling on a ferry from Ireland to Uk for 2 hours. Three never advised me that these charges apply/rates higher. I had no idea that the rates were higher or that I was connected to a different network. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything I can do? Thanks

@Add_15261 Hi there, when you're on a boat within the EU region, this is not part of EU roaming regulation. What this means is that any calls, texts or data used would be charged at the maritime rate as you'd be connected to a satellite network. Before travelling to the UK did you contact our CARE team to confirm your roaming allowances or check the roaming article we have here on the 3Community?

Hi Shane, thanks for that info. To be honest I didn’t  contact the care team. I have 34GB monthly allowance for roaming data. I had no idea of maritime rates and that these were not part of the roaming data allowance. I’m still shocked at the cost of €45 as I was only using mobile data for approx 45 minutes. just social media scrolling on the ferry.
i didn’t receive a notification from three to alert me to this. Usually when I’m in the UK I get a text message advising me of the rates etc.

@Add_15261 Thanks for getting back to me. As you didn't contact CARE there was no way for us to notify you of the possible charges before you went abroad.

While you do have a roaming allowance that only works while in EU countries but as you were on the ferry at the time you were charged the roaming rate which is €16.99 per MB. The high cost is due to receiving your signal from a satellite.

In regards to the charge on your bill as the data was used the charge is valid & I'll be unable to do anything regarding it.

So, my son and a busload of his schoolmates just had the same issue - he (well me as the account holder) was charged €50+VAT for 12MB usage, essentially a couple of snapchats, on the ferry from Dublin to UK.  No opt-in was necessary to incur these exorbitant fees.

This is one that ComReg needs to be cracking down on for sure, I'll be putting in a complaint.

Welcome to 3Community @montagnard.

I can understand the frustration, the cost of using data while at sea is very expensive as the signal is coming from a satellite. Have you discussed the charge with our care team?

I discussed the charge at the time with the care team but was advised it was basically “tough luck” and nothing could be done. I didn’t receive any notification that I was being charged roaming at sea rates. I have since left 3 and this was one of the reasons I left.

Yes, there's frustration, then there's the insult of being told that I should have known my phone was "connecting to a satellite". Seeing as how its 4G, that's physically impossible. Yes, so it turns out the ferry companies use a Telenor satellite service, and rebroadcast it using a 4G cell onboard when out of terrestrial 4G coverage. But why? Who in their right mind is going to sign up to accept charges of €17/MByte when there's Wifi onboard? It's clear that access should be denied to this network by Three until the user has explicitly opted-in to these charges. A warning SMS from Three that may or may not be received or seen (e.g. if your phone is in your bag) is not good enough. In the meantime your phone has performed a couple of background data tasks and BAM you've run up 3MBytes = €50+VAT - at which point Three are well able to cut off your data. Why not *before* you run up these charges? Perhaps because ComReg stipulate that max amount, and they realize most customers will feel stupid that they missed this particular "gotcha!", and take the hit. Not a great way to retain subscribers though.

Anyway, to answer your question - I spoke with a number of Three's Care Team over the space of a few hours, escalated my complaint and eventually was told that the satellite charges were waived/credited, though I can't confirm this until my next bill.

Same issue travelling on ferry to France.  Absolutely crazy, e200 fees were charged before we left Cork Harbour across 4 devices on the account.  I am absolutely disgusted.  Interesting that you charges were waived.  I'll be going to comreg with this one.  Speak to customer care, india team, chatbots, community help etc.  A really shocking way to treat customers
