Puzzling text from Three - is it genuine?

My husband got a text last Friday, apparently from Three, that neither of us can make sense of;

"Your top up payment card xxxx expires at the end of this month.  You'll need to update this at 3.ie /n5i 5r".  (Spaces added to unlink it, if that's the word).

The only payment cards we have are our bank's credit and debit cards, the 4-digit number in the text isn't the last 4 digits (or any group of digits) on any of them, and none of them are nearing expiry date.

Our topups are for a phone each and a router, all on Prepay,  I top up both my phone and the router SIM every 28 days; plus my husband's phone, if his credit's getting low (topup dates are only a useful reminder to check that, as his phone can be topped up any old time).  He just does a modest amount of calls and SMS, doesn't yet use any internet device, and has data turned off in his phone to avoid a couple of technical problems.

A calendar month doesn't often have its last day coinciding with our topup day, and this month isn't one of them (last Thursday was a topup day).

For convenience I do all our topups with my card, but I didn't receive the above message (in any form).  And he didn't receive a corresponding email as we sometimes do with this kind of thing.  (In case you're wondering how, he's happy to just access his email accounts in whatever internet devices I have at the time).

He's keeping the text for reference, until we know what's with it.  (The link in it wouldn't work of course even if he tried, but in any case the one tech thing he's been well briefed on is possible scams!).

Any ideas?

@Chrysanth Good morning, and thanks for highlighting this to us & for providing so much detail. You're absolutely right in your vigilance, it's better to ask about SMS like this or to ignore them.  NEVER click on links that are suspicious whether they are from Three or any other company.

I've linked in with our security team by sending on your post to investigate thoroughly. When you get the chance, will you pop me a PM with a screenshot of the text your husband got? I'm also looking for the exact timestamp ( Friday at what time?)

Thanks - PM sent.

@Chrysanth

I see your PM. The teams are looking into this to determine if this is an error or something to be wary of. Again thanks for bringing this to our attention. I'll pop back to you as soon as I know something more.

Thanks Deborah.

I couldn't be confidant that it was just a phishing attempt, with not knowing much about Three's other departments, like billpay, business accounts etc.  (E.g. I didn't realise for years what miPay was!).

@Chrysanth, I didn't want to leave you wondering what the story is over the weekend. We're continuing to look into this with our security team and our liaison in Mi-Pay. I'll come back to you either way Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Again, thanks so much for highlighting this to us.

Have a lovely weekend 🌞

You too - thanks for the update.

@Chrysanth

Sorry for the delay with an update. The relevant teams have investigated this fully to make sure this isn't a scam and THANKFULLY it isn't. It's a legit SMS alert from one of Three systems.

I know you mentioned that both the expiry date and last 4 digits were incorrect, and if you want to follow that part up, could your husband send a PM to us? The reason being is that the text was sent to his number.

Thanks Deborah.  Good to know it's not a scam!

I'll explain to him tomorrow what you said, and I expect he'll send you that PM.  We've no idea if getting that alert matters, but he likes to get loose ends out of the way!

(Yes, I understand why it needs to come from him).

@Chrysanth It's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to any message/links you're unsure of and get them checked out. Once your husband PMs us we'll get the card details checked out for him.
