With the recent launch of the iPhone14, Apple has also rolled out iOS 16, which has lots of new features that you might not even know about! Not to worry though, I’m here to help you get the most out of the newest version update.
Maybe you're buying a new phone? Take a look at our handy device guides.
Dedicated Duplicate Folder: Is your phone gallery looking a bit full? Have some duplicate pictures but don’t want to spend a lot of time scrolling? Well, don't worry! The iOS 16 Photos app can let you know if you have multiple identical photos, giving you the opportunity to delete or merge the extras to save space. Duplicate photos are listed in a new "Duplicates" album that appears if you have duplicates to deal with.
Wi-Fi Password: Have you had friends or family visit recently and they asked about your Wi-Fi password, only for you to realise you have forgotten what it is? Well, that won't be a problem in iOS 16. In the iPhone's Wi-Fi settings, you can see the password of the network that you are connected to.
Ability to Delete Pre-Installed Apps: Are you as annoyed as me about the amount of pre-loaded apps included on your iPhone that you don’t use and can’t delete? Apple is expanding the number of apps that you can delete from your phone. Here’s the total list of apps you can now delete: Calculator, Calendar, Clock, Compass, Contacts, FaceTime, Find My, Health, Home, iBooks, iCloud Drive, iTunes Store, Mail, Maps, Music, News (where available), Notes, Podcasts, Reminders, Stocks, Tips, Videos or TV, Voice Memos, Watch app, Weather. Deleted apps can be redownloaded from the App Store later, if needed.
See Your Battery Percentage: Apple will now allow you to display your battery percentage directly in the status bar inside of the battery icon, removing the need to swipe into the Control Center to check on your battery level.
Prevent Accidental Call Hangups: iOS 16 users can now disable the side button from ending an active call. To disable accidental hang-ups, go into Settings > Accessibility > Touch and toggle on "Prevent Lock to End Call." (Maybe I will forget to turn this off, so I can end those calls that are going on too long "by accident" 😂 )
Full-Screen Music Player: This is a fun feature for me. Apple is bringing back the full-screen Lock Screen music player. When listening to a song from Apple Music, Spotify, or other third-party music apps, press on the album art on the Lock Screen from Now Playing to enter the all-new player look. Tap the full-screen album art to minimize Now Playing.
Edit and Unsend Messages: I have saved the best for last! You can now unsend and edit a message. If you and your recipient both use iOS 16, it works seamlessly: the text changes in place, with a small blue “Edited” symbol, underneath which you can tap to see all versions of the message. The unsend feature, meanwhile, only works iMessage to iMessage.
