Vodafone Ireland have recently started issuing ESims in ROI. I think Three should follow suit soon, handsets such as iPhone only allow dual sim using one of these
@billbond4 I'm not sure there's any specific support for eSIM by the physical transmitter network. This is evidenced by the fact that, once you have an eSIM, you can roam on to any network with which the home network has a roaming agreement, even if the visited network doesn't support eSIM for its own customers. I believe the dependency is on the customer management system, for which Three Ireland and Three UK chose Amdocs.
Thanks @billbond4 All makes complete sense now. I think it’s a case “Horses for Courses” now. My old SE (2020) is unlocked, and eSim has two prepaid Vodafone numbers on it. Three will no doubt target Postpaid customers first, and I can’t blame them for that, especially when “Customer Management” platform migration is involved.
@NFH yes the antenna that you connected to doesnt need support for eSIMs, its in the core network that would need new servers to support eSIMs Then 3 will also have to train up Shop staff, support staff etc to support eSIM provisioning.
I'll be moving to Vodafone next week as well. I'm purchasing the US model iPhone while in the States and won't have a physical SIM slot anymore. I really thought Three would have eSIM figured out by now. I have a feeling Eir will launch eSIM before Three as well.
I spoke with our Three business account manager today about upgrading to iPhone 15 and asked him about esim by the way. He said that three is planning to launch esim (or virtual sim as he referred to it) with the iPhone 15 launch next week.
