VoLTE and WiFI Calling

Three are the only network in Ireland not yet offering either VoLTE or WiFi Calling.

Even GOMO are now offering it

@Krzysztof_32795 thanks for those steps.

@NFH have you tried the steps outlined by @Luke_67246 please let me know how you get on.

I have reached out to our devices team to let them know about the difficulties that you're experiencing as soon as I get an update from them I'll let you know.

I can't even get the white screen to pop up. I just get an error immediately. I've tried someone else's sim card, but it didn't work. VoLTE isn't working either.

@Three_StaceyYes, I've tried enabling wifi calling while on mobile data and no wifi, but I still get the same error. I've tried many times, just to be sure.

@NFH  Mine started working last night you still getting the error?

@Three_StaceyYes, I've just tried again, and I still get the same error. I can't activate wifi calling.

Thanks to @Three_Stacey, I have successfully activated wifi calling on my iPhone, but only after turning off wifi and using mobile data (which I had tried previously). However, I cannot actually use wifi calling because I am in the UK. I have tried it with flight mode on so that my iPhone doesn't know where it is, and it still doesn't work. This means that Three's wifi calling server blocks non-Irish IP addresses, contrary to the discussion earlier in this thread a while ago that the phone's location would be determined by a means other than IP address.

WiFi calling seems to be working well, using it the past few days, but a few niggling annoying issues using it (my iPhone 11 and wifeys iPhone 12) that aren't the case on other networks.

1. It seems to prefer the mobile network, even if it's borderline. If I start a WiFi call with no network signal, but then the phone catches even a sniff of the 3 mobile network signal, it latches onto that and the call drops. This is very annoying since coverage in the house is borderline and WiFi Calling is actually making it worse, not better. Plus from previous experience with Eir/GoMo, their network will use WiFi Calling regardless of the level of mobile network signal and this is something that can be controlled via the iPhone carrier file so would be great if 3 could tweak it.

2. With 3, calls don't seem to hand-off between VoLTE and VoWiFi. With Eir, if you start a call on 4G, then latch onto a WiFi network, the call will seamlessly handoff to a WiFi Call within a couple of seconds. Similarly in reverse, if you are on a WiFi Call and then leave the WiFi range, so long as you are in a 4G area the call will seamlessly handoff to a 4G call. Whereas with 3, if you start a 4G call then latch onto a WiFi network, it does not handoff to a WiFi call the call will drop once the mobile network signal is too weak, and a WiFi Call will drop instantly once it detects any form of mobile network signal.

3. Specifically on 4G calling, while I can make/take calls on 4G no problem, the network seems to like to transition the phone down to 3G and sometimes 2G very quickly, particularly if on the move and even if in areas of very good 4G (and 3G) coverage. It's rare that I can have a call that lasts any significant length of time on 4G before it's handed down to 3G (not too bad) or 2G (noticeably inferior call quality). Again from experience with Eir, I found their network too was very quick to move 3G calls onto 2G, but seemed quite happy leaving calls on 4G so long as it was available.

I know it's probably early days as these are only recent launches and there's a lot of tweaking and tuning that needs to be done to get the right balance of performance and stability so hopefully in time we'll get seamless and stable 4G calling and WiFi calling from 3!

@Kildare_P thank you very much for the detailed feedback, I've shared this feedback with our technical team and they are currently reviewing it 👍

@NFH I've spoken with our devices team and they have confirmed that we don't block VoWifi based on IP's address. VoWifi is only available domestically using cellular, GPS and GNSS locations.

@NFH Was the problem with your phone or your account? I contacted Three via chat and they said that there was no such thing as activating Wifi calling on three accounts and that the phone must be the problem.
