From time to time, we can use some words that may not ring a bell with you; some technical jargon. If so, don't worry! We've put together some of these useful terms and their definitions to help you along the way 

 

Wi-Fi

Wireless internet connection over a modem.

 

Mobile data

Wireless internet connection over a phone

 

5G

5G stands for the fourth generation of data technology for cellular networks. It delivers higher speeds, wider bandwidth, lower latency and more advanced capabilities than its predecessor

  

App

Apps are programs that run on your Smartphone. You can download new ones for all sorts of tasks and interests. You can view and download them in the Apps Store (iPhones), Play Store (Android) and Windows Apps (Windows Phones)

 

Social media

Services like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter that let you connect and share with others.

 

Instant messaging (IM)

Services like iMessage, WhatsApp or Viber that let you send text, pictures, video and audio using your internet connection. Most people will download WhatsApp and Viber and then use them as an alternative to MMS because it uses the data. Remember, if you've got AYCE then you can use these apps to your heart's content.

 

Roaming

Using your phone outside of the Republic of Ireland. It can cost more depending on your plan, so make sure you check your full allowances on My3 before you leave.

 

SIM card

The unique card that carries your phone number and network ID.

 

Memory card (SD card)

A small card that can store extra media like photos, video, files or apps and games.

 

Manual Network Selection (MNS)

This is the process of turning off the automatic network selection on your phone so it can search for all the available networks in your location - It's in your Settings > Network Settings.

 

APN

This stands for Access Point Name. It's a setting on mobile phones or Modems/Routers that Three uses to set up a connection to the gateway between our network and the internet.

 

Carrier

The Network Operator/Company.
