Vodafone Ireland have recently started issuing ESims in ROI. I think Three should follow suit soon, handsets such as iPhone only allow dual sim using one of these
@Dalkno, I didn’t have any luck. I’m not able to go to a store either as I’m in the U.S. til January! I’m not sure why Three makes things so difficult. There are plenty of modern ways to verify identity which don’t require visiting a store.
I wonder did they decide the in-store option in case there was teething problems. At least the store staff can deal with any issues then and there. Perhaps full automation will follow once things have settled down?
Anyhow I do agree it’s poor service for the customer. Lyca mobile is fully automated. You log into your account and request the eSIM. You then get sent a verification code. Once correctly entered you get a QR code emailed to you for the eSIM. It works and just as importantly, it’s hassle free. The Three solution is clunky and cumbersome. I really hope full automation follows very soon.
Thanks @Bruno_07153 Perhaps the difference is that you might be a postpaid customer and I am a prepaid customer, and we get through to different customer service departments. This could explain why they sent you an eSIM by e-mail but refused to do so three times for me.
I’m postpaid and they wouldn’t do it for me over the phone. Spoke to three different people, they all told me different things. Very disjointed approach by three.
I also phoned a Three store to ask whether they could issue the eSIM remotely. She really wanted to help, but said I had to be physically in the store for GDPR reasons. I asked whether it would be possible by video in order to show my ID etc, but she said unfortunately that wouldn't be possible either. I wonder whether another Three store might find a way around this.
If you need to be in a Store for GDPR reasons, then does that mean other providers who are fully automated are in breach of GDPR?
Hard to believe that’s true (although I don’t doubt that you were told that).
Automated verification codes are used everywhere, even by banks. Also the customer support person on the line can verify who you are by asking you a set of personal questions, as is an established practice everywhere now. No need to be “in person” these days.
Hi everyone, just wanted to say beware going into three for eSIM and make sure they know what they’re doing. I went into three yesterday for my eSIM and the QR code came up on the screen but the guy went to my camera app first then realising he was doing it wrong, took too long to go into my settings to go to add eSIM and select QR code camera to scan my eSIM. The QR code only stays on the screen for one minute then disappears. The emailed code I received then wouldn’t work cause you can only use the code once. Sooo… my number transferred from my physical sim to an eSIM code I could no longer use. So right now I have no access to my number. They have to get my number back onto a physical sim and then do the eSIM again 🤦🏻♀️
I know teething issues are to be experienced but like wouldn’t they have been told that morning how to do eSIM. When I first went in and said I want eSIM the guy looked at me like I had two heads and turned around to the other guy there for help. The other guy knew how to do it and told the guy to do it to train him I guess but… shouldn’t he have already known. They then got the manager over when they tried to get me a new eSIM code but the system wasn’t allowing it. Sooo again, why didn’t the manager explain this morning…
I did ask the manager about Apple Watches and he said he was told it’s coming in early 2024. They wanna get eSIM running smoothly first.
So anyways, make sure they know they to have the QR code camera in the add eSIM up and ready to go before requesting the eSIM 🤦🏻♀️
I went into a Three store today to switch over to eSIM and once I explained it to the person in the store, they were able to do it without and issue. They bright up my details on the screen, showed me a QR code to scan and it was all done. I was pleasantly surprised, but at least I have a free SIM slot now.
