ESIM Rollout

Hi

Vodafone Ireland have recently started issuing ESims in ROI.  I think Three should follow suit soon, handsets such as iPhone only allow dual sim using one of these

Doesn’t time fly. It’s about 4 or 5 months since the same was promised. Really hope eSim available for all soon. 🐢

It’s definitely last chance saloon stuff. They have a week to get it announced.

just something fyi.

The history of esim from Wikipedia:

Since 2010, the GSMA had been discussing the possibility of a software-based SIM.

While Motorola noted that eUICC is geared at industrial devices, Apple "disagreed that there is any statement forbidding the use of an embedded UICC in a consumer product". Currently, the GSMA maintains two different versions of the standard: one for consumer devices[2] and another for machine to machine (M2M) devices.

A first version of the standard was published in March 2016, followed by a second version in November 2016.

That's over 13 years ago. Since 2016 eSIM's are already integrated in any kind of communication devices and Three knew that this will come and didn't do anything to develop this scenario.

That's what's making me upset and what I don't really understand.

The last 3 years eSIM's would have been more and more integrated in devices and all manufacturer predicted that they will also install eSIM's.

What I mean to say is that Three would have had enough time to prepare for this development and not do everything at the last minute, especially since this technology is no longer a new development as other network operators have successfully established this in their networks for years.

When will Three finally make a concrete, binding statement when eSIM technology will finally be available in their network?

Despite all the understanding and efforts for the supporters here, only excuses and non-binding statements are received here.
So far, the management has not felt compelled to make a clear commitment to this topic!

It's just more than disappointing that Three lets its most important resource, namely its customers, down like this!

I don't understand why so many of you remain so sure that the iPhone 15 will be eSIM-only in Ireland and other European countries. The only European country where this is strongly rumoured in France, which has very few MVNOs.

The article that I posted above two weeks ago suggests that the iPhone 15 will have a physical SIM tray. Many European networks have still not implemented eSIM, particularly for prepaid customers. For example, Telefónica still hasn't implemented eSIM for its Movistar prepaid customers in Spain, for its O2 prepaid customers in the UK or most notably for giffgaff in the UK, which is a prepaid-only network and an official iPhone supported carrier. Perhaps more relevantly to us here, Three UK has still not implemented eSIM for its prepaid customers, despite having done so very recently for postpaid customers.

I am guessing that Apple initially pressured European networks to support eSIM in time for the iPhone 15 's launch, but many subsequently failed to do so in time, and so most European countries will get the same iPhone 15 with a SIM tray as in most of the rest of the world.

I don’t get the impression people on here are sure iPhone 15 will be eSIM only…

I think people want three to launch eSIM for a variety of reasons.

I want eSIM for my Apple Watch ultra, and to allow me to purchase an iPhone 15 in the states and use it here.  Even with the poor exchange rate on the higher end models there are serious savings to be made.

Personally I need eSim so I can utilise dual sim capability on my present iPhone. A basic requirement these days.

It must be noted that only Vodafone provides eSims in Ireland. Three are not alone in being behind the curve.

It’s true three aren’t the only ones not to offer it.  But it’s just a shame they weren’t first off the gate with it.

You would think three will follow immediately after Vodafone started issuing Esim but that isn’t the case for them which is sad, soon everyone will start moving away from three to Vodafone Bcos of this 😭😭

Unfortunately with 46 hours to go, I can’t see them launching it in time for iPhone 15.

@Dalk maybe they will announce it on the same day of the iPhone launch.
If they don’t, well it means it’s not a very good company as they are always so slow in implementing updates etc.

there should be a mass exodus!
